In summary, RMON can provide a number of host-derived statistics; and stores these statistics in several different ways for the convenience of the end user.
7.11 Event Notification Using RMON
In the previous example, we studied how RMON maintains statistics of a network’s operation. In this case study, we will show how RMON can extend that capability to send a notification if a particular network parameter has exceeded the range of acceptable operation. The network consists of a single Ethernet segment with an attached RMON network management console and remote monitoring agent, or probe (Figure 7-11). In order for the probe to monitor and respond to a particular network statistic, it must first be programmed by the manager (see Trace 7.11a).
