Java Script Trouble Shooting

Before you write for help, see if the solution you're looking for is outlined below. (Updated 1/31/98)

  • The Script Doesn't Work!
The quick answer is that it does. All scripts on this site must work for me before I hand them off to you. So you can be sure that the script does work. There is just a problem somewhere.

  • Nothing Happens.
Nothing? Then you probably don't have a high-enough browser to run Java Script. If the script was functional, then you would either get the script's effect or an error code.

  • I Get an Error Code
You saw that coming, didn't you? Make note of the line the error code is coming from. That is the line from the TOP OF THE PAGE not from the top of the Java script. Count your HTML as line one.

  • Fix the Error Code Remember, form is key here. Most times, error codes can be fixed by making sure the script is in the exact form as it was when you took it from me. Make sure the line hasn't been chopped off early or jumped to the next line before it should have been. This will solve most of all error codes. The reason is that I know the code worked when you grabbed it from me. The error occurred somewhere in the transfer.

  • It Works on My Computer, But Not When Posted.
You have corrupted it in the FTP transfer. Change the form that you sent it in. If you sent it ASCII, try BINARY and vice versa.

  • From Robert Gasiorowski: I noticed that NN4 requires document to have a TITLE. If it doesn't, some scripts won't work (for example my image mover ). I don't know exactly which versions of NN4, but this little thing caused many problems in my programming life. The point is, always use a TITLE.

  • From Robert Gasiorowski: Do not use "eval" as object method. Use it as a built-in function, because it was removed from NN4.00 and 4.01 as a method. Starting ver. 4.02 it is back as a method, but for compatibility, use it as function only.
