Homework (not to be handed in)
(Note, Further questions from these sections will be set next week,
after we've covered these sections in more detail.)
- Ex 2.1 Page 75, A.Ex 2, 3. B.Ex 8, 10, 13
- Ex 2.2 Page 83, A.Ex 1,3.
- Ex 2.3 Page 88, B.Ex 1
- Ex 2.4 Page 92, B.Ex 1
- Ex 2.5 Page 95, B.Ex 3(b)
Assignment Due date: Wednesday 11 February.
1. Find the derivatives of the following functions, using the rules given
in above:
- f(x) = 3x10 + 4x2 - x + 1
- f(x) = (x+3)(x-6)
- f(x) = (x+3)/(x-6)
- f(x) = 2(3x2 + 1)2
2. Find the equations for the tangent to the curve y= x2
-3x+1 at x=1, x=2, x=3. Sketch a graph of the curve between x=0 and x=4.
(Plot points at x=1,2,3, and sketch the tangents).
Make sure your graph is clearly labled - lable points plotted, tangents drawn,
axes.
Sample Quiz
Next week there will be a short quiz with a question similar to the
following:
Find the equation for the tangent to y=x3-x at x=2
(You can find the solution here)
Office hour and Tutorial times
Office Hours for Lecturer: (room Jeff 401) Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday : 2:30-3:30
(becuase of clash of my office hours with TA's office hours, this may be changed if we can work out times that don't clash that we can both manage.)
Office Hours for TA: (room Jeff 222) Monday, Wednesday 2:30-3:30
Tutorial Time (room Jeff 116): Tuesday 2:30-3:30
Note, Overheads can be found on reserve in Douglas library, and
