Each lecture will be 3 hours long. This will be broken up in the following way:
| Old stuff | Review of last weeks stuff | (15 minutes) |
|---|---|---|
| We will go over what you were meant to learn for the quiz, going over an example which was given the week before. Also this is a time to ask any quick questions about thing you didn't understand, but need to know for the quiz. (Save longer questions for the tutorial/example session at the end, or bring them to office hours.) Note, in the first lecture, I will just tell you about the format of the course in this section. | ||
| Quiz | (10 minutes) | |
| This will be similar to a question I'll hand out at the lecture the previous week. Note, in the first lecture, we will go over the diagnostic tests in this section. | ||
| break (5 minutes) | ||
| New stuff | preview | (5 minutes) |
| I will just list the topics that we will cover so you know what's coming. Also during the break, when you hand in your quizzes, you should pick up a handout, which will list what you should learn during the next 30 minutes, and which will include a "sample quiz", which will be similar to the quiz which you'll take at the beginning of the next weeks lecture, and which will be based on what you'll learn this class. | ||
| Main part of lecture | (30 minutes) | |
| This is were you have to concentrate hard for 30 minutes to absorb new ideas! | ||
| break (20 minutes) | ||
| Recap | We'll go over what the new stuff was about | (5 or 10 minutes) |
| In the break some of the ideas should sink in, so we'll go over things again, and I'll expect some feed back from the audience to some questions based on the first half. In the break you can go get coffee or whatever, but hopefully at least your subconscious will process some of what's gone in; you can also ask questions during the break about what happened in the first half. If you are completely happy with the first half, and can do the "sample quiz" easily, you don't need to stay for this second half of the class. | ||
| Preview | A quick look at what we'll do next time | (5 or 10 minutes) |
| I will give a brief overview of the next lecture, and how it follows on from this one, so you have an idea of what to expect. If you prepare a little and read ahead a little, you should be able to absorb next weeks material better. | ||
| Tutorial/examples | A chance to see examples done, and work on some yourself | (rest of class) |
| The hand out will include a list of homework problems (which you don't hand in for marking), and assignment problems (which you should hand in for marking the next week). In this part of the class students can work on these questions, but I will be on hand to help people out. This will be a mixture of worked examples which I'll do on the board, and time for you to see if you can do the same kind of thing yourself. In the first few classes, this section will be for basic algebra, and the TA will be in the class to help too. Generally, in this section, you can ask questions about anything from previous classes, or background algebra, as well as the material for this week. | ||
