These are notes for the course; they are not as full as the notes that will be given in the lectures, but most of the ideas should be covered here. They will be updated as the course progresses. Numbers in brackets give the corresponding section of the book. We will be covering the core topics from chapters 1 to 6 of the book: sections: 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 7.1.
If we have time we will look at some other areas too. Applications will be mentioned, but we will not go into them all in detail in class; but please read about them in the book.
