Roosevelt accepting nomination at the convention, 1932.
Roosevelt broke tradition in coming to the convention to accept the nomination in person. In this speech, which was broadcast nationwide on radio, the American people heard for the first time of the New Deal: "I pledge to you -- I pledge myself -- to a new deal for the American people. . . . This is more than a political campaign; it is a call to arms. Give me your help, not to win votes alone, but to win in this crusade to restore America to its own people."
